Museum of Chinese in America

The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) was opened in 1980 with a lofty goal: to preserve and present over a century of Chinese-American history. To this end, the museum curates oral histories, presents exhibits, and shines a light on Chinese Americans both past and present. Recently, MOCA was featured in the Condé Nast Traveler as one of the best small museums in New York City and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal

  • Size: a 16,000-sq.-ft. museum with core and rotating exhibits and a collection that includes 65,000 plus artifacts, photos, and more
  • Permanent Exhibition: With a Single Step, where films and items from the collection explore the history of Chinese Americans from the 1700s to the present
  • Special Programs: drop-in art-making workshops for all ages, signature Family Festivals, curator talks, film screenings, performances, members-only events, professional development workshops for educators
  • The Building: a remodeled machinery factory warehouse from the early 1900s designed by world-renowned artist Maya Lin - a 2015 U.S. Department of State Medal of Arts recipient
  • Hidden Gem: one of the museum's portal windows looks out onto a historic Chinatown shop
  • Pro Tip: hop on our Chinatown walking tour, daily at 10:30 a.m. (except Mondays)

Great museum to learn history of Chinese in America.

The museum was located at a very unique place. I was really fond of the inner design and displays, especially for the poetry and stories illustrated by Asian Americans from the past century. Highly recommend this-- it's an opportunity to learn, to explore and to appreciate :)

Nice, small museum. As an ABC, it was a great way to share some of our family experiences with my kids.
