On loan from the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid—one of the world’s premier collections of European paintings—the 100 masterworks in Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado whisk visitors on a tour of 400 years of Spanish history via paintings by such masters as Francisco de Goya, Diego Velázquez, and El Greco. These artists fill each frame with a wealth of vivid and intensely human detail. The wide-eyed gaze of a boy prince. The quiet dignity of a crockery vendor amid the dust of a busy thoroughfare. The beseeching stare of Christ shouldering the cross. Through these images, viewers can understand the enormous social, cultural, and political changes that shaped modern Spanish identity.<p>

The exhibition also includes canvases by Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, and other masters who influenced the course of Spanish art. Entry to the show is offered every 30 minutes until one hour before the museum closes.

About The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

Jutting above the street, the modernist lines of Rafael Moneo's Audrey Jones Beck Building - one of two gallery buildings at the MFAH - echo the eclectic collection found within. Under sky openings that let in natural light and the bitter gazes of pigeons who can’t seem to get their work shown, visitors meander through galleries that span the breadth of human artistry, from ancient sculpture to modern painting. A treasure trove of cultural artifacts from Africa, Asia, and the Americas expands the museum’s scope and transports visitors back in time as they gaze on a palpably pensive ceramic ballplayer from Mexico's Classic Veracruz culture or a life-size royal head forged from copper for a Nigerian royal court.
