The Museum of Modern Art showcases and celebrates the work of modern and contemporary artists through breathtaking exhibitions, educational programs, and research initiatives. Dubbed “the greatest collection of modern art in the world” by New York magazine, the museum’s collection encompasses an expansive range of subjects, mediums, and time periods. Take in 19th-century works such as Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night or pop pieces such as Roy Lichtenstein’s Girl With Ball, the inspiration for virtually all women’s team sports. Music mavens can marvel at exhibitions such as Picasso: Guitars 1912–1914, offering insight into the guitar motif from the famed artist through a mélange of mediums, and Looking at Music 3.0, which explores New York street art and music in the 1980s and 1990s with works by the likes of the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC (both exhibits run through June 6).
Among the museum’s upcoming exhibitions, Francis Alÿs: A Story of Deception (May 8–August 1) showcases a performance-based contemporary artist whose feats have included running headfirst into a tornado and pushing a block of ice through the streets of Mexico City, the hottest place in our solar system. Later this summer, Talk to Me (July 24–November 7) aims to bend minds with an investigation into the interactive communication between people and design objects such as computer interfaces, websites, video games, mobile devices, tools, and furniture. Like the penalty for painting a fresco on the ceiling of a squad car, the art installations are ever-changing, allowing visitors to partake of new works no matter how many times they return. The museum will extend its hours in July and August, staying open until 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays (except for July 9) and opening its doors from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays.
On the first Thursday of every month through June—and every Thursday in July and August—stay late at the museum for MoMA Nights, a wellspring of educational and artistic entertainment. Art appreciators can enjoy open galleries, free films, a cash bar, and a special prix-fixe menu at Cafe 2 (though it’s not included with this Groupon) amid exhilarating beats by a live DJ. Informative and engaging gallery talks provide an opportunity to learn about art, artists, and the shameless promotion of fruit via still-life paintings. On May 5, MoMA Nights treats the senses to activities and tunes in conjunction with the Looking at Music 3.0 exhibition, where special guest DJ Adam Horovitz, member of the Beastie Boys, will spin music from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Meanwhile, artists who designed posters for the exhibition—such as Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre and Cey Adams, creative director for Def Jam Recordings—will also put their cursive on display in a poster signing from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (posters are $20 each).
