To start, it is important that we keep in mind just how often the weather report for this region is, well, wrong. Hahahaha! And even when we do have rain during the touring season, it often passes through quite quickly, as opposed to sticking around for days on end. We're very lucky in that respect.
Yes, our Segway Experience does operate in a little bit of rain, which presents no particular risks to riders or to the Segway machines. In fact, a little rain can be refreshing as we cruise along the Charles River this time of year; it adds to the sense of adventure. And we do indeed provide disposable ponchos as a free service to our guests.
When the weather is a bit more severe (e.g. driving rain, dangerous winds, ice of any kind, lightning nearby), we will always err on the side of caution and will reschedule tours, as needed.
Most often what has happened in the past is that a group of riders, accompanied by their experienced Tour Guide, of course, encounters a small amount of rain and simply takes cover somewhere dry until it passes. This might be somewhere on the MIT campus, on which there are many places to wait out the passing rain.
