The Museum of the City of New York explores the past, present, and future of the Big Apple through a series of engaging exhibitions. Hurry in to see Samurai in New York: The First Japanese Delegation, 1860 (ends on November 7). This exhibit delves into the historic 1860 visit of more than 70 Japanese samurais, the first contingent to have left the closed island nation in 200 years, due to airport security concerns regarding swords. Timescapes: A Multimedia Portrait of New York allows visitors to skip a hefty semester’s tuition and awkward freshman mixers at NYU and instead cram a semester’s worth of city history into a 25-minute multimedia presentation. The museum’s expansive permanent collections house more than 1.5 million images and objects, including an exclusive assemblage of vintage clothing from America’s fashion capital.

Like being friends with a dual chocolatier/dentist, museum membership has its benefits. All members receive unlimited admission for one year, invitations to members-only events, and discounted admission to ticketed public programs, including lectures and performances. Associate membership includes full benefits for a pair of history lovers. While individual members receive a 10% discount at the Museum Shop and Café, associate members receive a 15% discount plus exclusive invites to every exhibition opening and reception.

About Museum of the City of New York

Located on Fifth Avenue, the Museum of the City of New York, housed in a newly renovated Georgian Colonial-Revival building, is a nonprofit museum that hosts temporary exhibitions to complement extensive permanent collections.

  • Neighborhood: The landmark building can be found on Fifth Avenue and 103rd Street, at the southern end of East Harlem and just across the street from Central Park’s Conservatory Garden.
  • Don't Miss: New York at Its Core, an ongoing exhibit that showcases the city's storied past and possible futures through hundreds of objects and photos and contemporary video, and interactive experiences. The exhibit shines a light on generations of American Dreamers—whether they were tycoons, immigrants, builders, or politicians (or all of the above.)
  • Watch for: Timescapes, an award-winning multi-media 28-minute documentary that delves into the city's evolution since its establishment, concluding with a capture of the city's transformations over the first two decades of the 21st century.
  • Grab a bite: The Museum's Chalsty's Cafe overlooks Central Park for a perfect view, whether the park is blanketed in snow or covered in autumn colors.
