Wax has long been considered a highly creative and versatile artistic medium ever since giant candles began infiltrating museums disguised as human beings. Get craftily inventive with today’s Groupon: for $20, you get a one-hour 3-D wax design class at My Handyworks in St. Charles (a $40 value). The class is always $20 for members of military with ID. Helmed by its artist owner, My Handyworks introduces burgeoning craft wranglers to the art of 3-D wax designs through small classes, one-on-one attention, and a bevy of shapes to fit each creator’s inimitable tastes. Youngsters and adults alike will cozy up to their individual 1’x2’ white wood boards after selecting their layout and desired pre-made molds of items such as palm trees, butterflies, or palm trees made out of butterflies. Each mold is filled with wax in the artist’s chosen color and rests for 5 minutes while the wax hardens. Masterpiece makers will pose their designs on the board to replicate a favorite scene, such as a day in the park or a town hall meeting commandeered by a giant heart. Adhesive holds the wax figures tightly to the board, while each magnum opus is colored with a border to give it the look of a frame, making finished products ideal displays on mantelpieces or in place of family photographs.
At My Handyworks, the team specializes in turning handprints into art. They can transform a set of acrylic-paint handprints and footprints on a tile into a custom painting, perhaps of a duck, or dyed wax molds of hands into keepsake statuettes. Their art classes, meanwhile, cover a wide variety of skills, teaching kids to decorate pumpkins and adults to recreate masterpieces by Monet and Van Gogh.
