Eyelash Extension Adhesive: Super Strong, Super Subtle
Technicians use a special adhesive for individual eyelash extensions that’s available only to trained experts. Read on to see what makes it so special.
Natural-looking yet genetics-defying eyelashes: that’s the goal of eyelash-extension salons. Each tiny extension is attached to an existing lash with a special kind of medical-grade glue that disappears into the lashes so clients can forget they weren’t born looking that way. It’s a delicate process performed by highly trained technicians, but it wouldn’t have been invented if not for a common household item: Super Glue.
In 1942, Dr. Harry Coover invented Super Glue by mistake. While trying to formulate a clear plastic to be used for gun sights at Eastman-Kodak during World War II, he and his team found that one substance was so sticky that it was almost impossible to work with—it would bind to just about anything, with no need for heat, pressure, or pleading. The company eventually put it on the market in 1958. Chemically known as a cyanoacrylate, the adhesive eventually found experimental use in the Vietnam War as a way to quickly close wounds and stop excessive bleeding, giving wounded soldiers more time to seek medical help in the field. Eventually the FDA approved forms of it for use in medicine.
Today, different cyanoacrylate formulations are used in dental surgery, to rejoin veins, and in the eyelash salon. Despite its ancestor’s application of bonding skin, eyelash-extension glue is meant to touch the lash only. To avoid contact with the lid, the glue is applied to the extension rather than the natural lash. Then it’s held against the lash with tiny tweezers for the 30–40 seconds it takes for the chemical bond to form—and repeated dozens of times until the lids are as lushly curtained as the client likes.

About A Chat with MyLash and Skin Spa
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
MyLash and Skin Spa offers eyelash extensions and skincare services done by a California Licensed Esthetician. I have been a Licensed Esthetician since 2012 and have four years of experience as an eyelash extension artist. Experienced technicians have perfected their skills as well as ‘worked out the kinks’ of finding superior products. Everyone has to start somewhere when it comes to learning a new skill or embarking on a new venture…well, I have put that time in and I am very confident in my training and experience. My experience not only deals with my training, but also with me personally wearing eyelash extensions for the last five years. I have been on both sides of the experience. If you have a question, I have encountered it either personally or professionally!
What was the inspiration to start or run this business
While MyLash and Skin Spa is a new business venture, it is only in a new geographic location. I was previously licensed as an Esthetician in Nebraska beginning in 2012. I love my Midwest roots and the work ethic that goes along with my upbringing…and I love beautiful, sunny California. I feel like I have the best of both worlds. Wherever I reside, the inspiration for my business is always to combine my passion, education, and customer service skills to deliver results to my clients. . My passion not only focuses on eyelashes/skincare, but also on people. Prior to my career as an esthetician, my background and education have always been centered around human services. I have a Bachelor’s in Sociology and almost two decades of experience in customer service/hospitality.
What do you love most about your job?
My clients…more specifically, making them light up when they see results. I love to how often I get to hear ‘I feel so much more confident when I have eyelash extensions’, ‘I look five years younger with eyelash extensions’ ‘This is the only thing I ever get to do for myself’ ‘I love how beautiful eyelash extensions make my eyes look’ ‘These extensions have made my life/routine so much easier’. I am beyond excited to go to work every day! I feel so lucky to have a career that makes women feel confident and beautiful while utilizing my expertise and artistic talent.
What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer?
“Julia does my lashes here in California. I can't begin to tell you how awesome and professional she is! I had never had lashes before, but decided to try them out! She went over different types (longer, shorter, wispy, thick, etc) and which she felt would be best for me. I LOVE my lashes and have tried different styles now too. She is extremely knowledgeable about lash extensions and skin care, and I always look forward to my appointments with her. If you haven't had lash extensions, get them! They are amaaaaaazing!!! They take about 10 years off your face, I swear! Like an instant (and far less expensive) face lift! It's crazy! And, they make putting on makeup so much quicker...or I don't even really have to wear eye makeup at all! The lashes make my eyes so pretty by themselves!
