Beauty, fashion tips and exclusive articles on Hispanic entertainers; fitness magazine with celebrity workouts and healthy recipes
People en Espanol
What began as a Spanish translation of People has developed into a well-regarded magazine in its own right. Founded in 1996, People en Español covers the world of entertainment, especially Latin specialties such as the world of telenovelas and celebrities within Latin American countries. Each issue includes exclusive articles and interviews, as well as beauty and fashion tips.
Shape
Fitness magazine Shape’s 1981 founding came with some controversy. The publisher wanted a commercial-style magazine with sexy models and more fluff than hard journalism. But founder Christine MacIntyre wanted to give women the real scoop. She wanted the models to look healthy, the language to avoid sexist tropes, and the articles to be penned by people with real credentials. In the end, MacIntyre won: under her editorship, Shape required every writer have an advanced medical degree. Contributor Cynthia Sass, for example, provides nutritional advice based on her knowledge as a registered dietitian and degree in public health. The magazine is also printed on recycled paper, a practice that helps Shape save more than 17,000 trees per year.
