With its sensuous twists and undulating curves, belly dancing can express a wide variety of emotions, from "Look at my belly!" to "See what I just did with my belly?" Learn to shimmy what you're thinking with today's Groupon: for $20, you get four belly-dancing classes at Nadia Ibrahim Middle Eastern Dance Company in Kenmore (a $40 value).
Nadia Ibrahim twists her body with the diverse folkloric groove traditions that contribute to the art of belly dancing, earning Art Voice's readers' choice award for Best Genre-Defying Artist in 2009 and Best Dancer this year. The schedule of classes starts with Level One belly-dancing sessions for beginners, during which Nadia teaches 20–25 novice stomach shakers the basics of navel control and veil work. Level Two and Three classes then move on to more advanced shimmies and synchronized Heimlich maneuvers.
During each one-hour session, Ibrahim draws on her multicultural training to lead students through a rhythmic tour of Middle Eastern styles. Fledgling torso undulators should come dressed in spandex or another form of stretchy pant, brandishing either bare feet or flexible ballet-like shoes. Those already knowledgeable in the ways of the belly dance, whether from a trip to the Middle East or a childhood in a house full of navel-sized doorknobs, can try one of the more advanced lessons after consulting with Nadia.
