Humankind has always wondered at that which is just beneath the surface, particularly after finding a live lobster lurking in a bowl of bisque. Plumb Puget Sound's icy brine with today's Groupon: for $39, you get a one- to two-hour snorkeling tour of the shallows in Puget Sound from Naknek Charters and Diving in the port of Friday Harbor (an $80 value).
From the 45' converted fishing boat the Naknek, Kurt and Peggy Long provide experienced and dry-behind-the-ears divers easy access to a kaleidoscopic cornucopia of surface and undersea life. These cold-water plunges are accompanied by an experienced scuba diver who draws up deep-dwelling denizens to elicit a series of bubbly oohs and ahhs as prismatic multitudes of octopods, anemones, urchins, and giant crabs perform elaborate calypso dance numbers. Preparation for the scuba tour begins at Spring Street Landing, and lasts from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with time spent handing out equipment and traveling to the diving site and back. Based on conditions and travel, in-water time may vary.
Naknek Charters and Diving provides all necessary equipment, including mask, snorkel, fins, boots, and more, and it staves off the incumbent frigidity with warm drinks and snacks on board.
