The National Philharmonic goes international with this evening celebrating a trio of legendary composers from Italy (Vivaldi), Germany (Beethoven) and Russia (Piatigorsky). Cellist Zuill Bailey kicks off this concert at the Music Center at Strathmore with two lively concertos by Baroque master Antonio Vivaldi. Bailey then turns to Piatigorsky's gorgeous Variations on a Paganini Theme, which features a soulful variation performed by preeminent cellist Pablo Casals, plus a slower variation handled by master violinist Fritz Kreisler. Beethoven's short masterpiece "Elegischer Gesang" ("Elegiac Song") for strings and mixed voices is followed by Vivaldi's Gloria, whose joyful air and triumphant choruses you might recognize from films such as Shine and The Hunter.
