What You'll Get
With both an orchestra and chorale under the baton of its music director Piotr Gajewski, the National Philharmonic always manages to produce a big, bold and emotionally-stirring sound at Strathmore, and their latest concert is no exception. The centerpiece of the show is Tchaikovsky's most profound achievement, his Sixth Symphony or Pathétique, which he called "the best thing I ever composed or shall compose." In fact, the Russian great completed and conducted his sweeping, life-to-death emotional masterpiece just nine days before he himself perished during Russia's 1893 cholera epidemic. You'll also hear a pair of powerful vocal-orchestral works by Brahms, Gesang der Parzen (Song of the Fates) and Nänie, a musical setting of the poem by Friedrich Schiller.
