While fast food has negative connotations, a select few restaurants are reversing the moniker's implications by both serving healthy fast food and dumping propaganda out of crop dusters. Today's deal features an equally quick and healthy option, without the screeching flyovers: $7 for $15 worth of unprocessed food fare at Natural Selection, a more-than-sandwich shop in Arcadia that speedily serves organic-oriented dishes with local, unprocessed ingredients.
The Natural Selection menu focuses on breakfast, sandwiches, wraps, salads, and smoothies. Try the breakfast burrito ($6.75), a wake-up call full of four egg whites, pico de gallo, cheese, and your choice of ham or turkey. For lighter morning fare, Natural Selection also serves up low-fat yogurt or low-fat cottage cheese ($4.25), which comes with a choice of two fruits and granola. If you're hungry after the sun reaches its meridian, wraps are a popular lunchtime or post-workout choice ($7.50 or $8.25, with a side salad and seasonal fruit). The chipotle wrap is an edible torpedo of grilled chicken, spinach, ever-spicy pico de gallo, jack cheese, and titular chipotle sauce, while the mild Mediterranean wrap is a flattened bowling bowl stuffed with grilled chicken, baby greens, cucumbers, black olives, feta cheese, hummus, and Mediterranean dressing.
The shop itself resembles a sandwich takeout place, with a smattering of tables and chairs and a counter that serves double duty as order station and food-preparation zone. The Spartan décor complements the numerous shirtless warriors who frequent from the gym next door, looking to quiet their beverage cravings. Natural Selection makes juices, shakes, and smoothies with organic fruits and vegetables. Give your cellular makeup a squeeze with the cleanse juice ($5), a blend of carrot, apple, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, and celery, or boost your protein intake with the natural muscle shake ($3.75/16 oz., $5/24 oz.), bursting with milk, peanut butter, banana, oatmeal, frozen yogurt, and chocolate protein. Smoothie-wise, there's the pomerful ($3.75/16 oz., $5/24 oz.), a punch-up of pomegranate juice, mixed berries, mango, and honey.
