In early mankind’s scavenger hunts, everyone who gathered enough berries to avoid starvation was a winner, but most winners were still eaten by leopards. Enjoy less perilous scavenging with today’s Groupon: for $60, you get a two-person team registration to the Urban Assault Ride on Sunday, May 15 (up to a $120 value). Participants must register by Friday, May 13.
The Urban Assault Ride, which is sponsored by New Belgium Brewing, sends bi-wheeled lads and lasses on a citywide bicycle scavenger hunt, in which driven teams of pedal pushers scour Madison for checkpoints containing whimsical obstacle courses. Past challenges have included human bowling, piggyback polo, and paperboy relay, but each course is kept under wraps beforehand to ensure that time travelers retain their rightful advantage. Teams choose their own route and checkpoint order for the concrete journey, speeding off from Olin Park before venturing out in search of checkpoints and two mystery checkpoints.
The team to cruise through all checkpoints in the shortest amount of time wins, and the top three road-warrior duos will receive prizes for their valiant efforts, such as Timbuk2 bags, Keen shoes, Urban Assault Ride socks and arm warmers, and a handshake from George Washington’s ghost, who scavenged America out of an English dumpster. After crossing the finish line, all teams can celebrate at the after-party, overflowing with New Belgium beer, big wheels, and raffle prizes, which include a limited-edition New Belgium bike. The Urban Assault Ride also helps promote bicycle commuting and does its civic cyclical duty by implementing myriad environmental practices and contributing proceeds to local nonprofits.
