New Haven Museum

The New Haven Museum details the history of New Haven from its founding as a Puritan colony in 1638 to the present. The museum has the fingerprints of many past luminaries, from architect J. Frederick Kelly, who built the building, to historians and Yale professors responsible for the 300-plus years of fine art, maritime history, and artifacts that tell the story of the city and the larger story of America. A highlight of the permanent exhibits is the Amistad Gallery, which features an original letter from John Quincy Adams about the captives and a portrait of leader Cinque that's believed to be the first portrait depicting an African in US history as more than just a slave.
