  • $45 for a two-hour furniture-refinishing class for two (a $100 value)

During each furniture-refinishing workshop, experts guide students through surface-beautifying basics, allowing them to adorn dull tables, dressers, and other furnishings with nontoxic paints and coatings. Included with registration is a coupon for five stain samples and three paint samples for finishing up DIY projects at home. Patrons can bring in their own old furniture, allowing them to refurbish end tables and chairs that otherwise might have been thrown away.

New Living Bedroom

Having resolved at a young age to pursue his passion for green building, Jeff Kaplan created the Urban Land Institute's Young Leaders Program when he was just 21 years old. In late 2007, Jeff started New Living, a green building and home store whose high environmental standards earned the shop a B Corporation certification. Today, New Living sells exclusively eco-friendly products from ethical businesses, stimulating the local green economy while making green materials more affordable and accessible. Staff members passionate about responsible consumerism often help customers interested in repurposing and refinishing items. Kaplan's efforts at revitalizing Houston's small businesses and affinity for wearing capes earned him the title of Green Hero from the U.S. Green Building Council.

“It would have been more beneficial and efficient to intersperse the teaching and the time we got to work on our own piece. For example, teach about how to strip and then give time to apply gel stripper so that we can wait for it while learning the next part of the lesson. Also having all supplies clean and ready to use would also help class flow. Otherwise, our instructors were knowledgable and very good teachers. We had a great time and feel better equipped to tackle our own project. Thank you Green Painter!”
