What You'll Get

Marcus Thompson, the first person to earn a doctorate in viola performance from Juilliard, debuts an exciting new concerto for his instrument by award-winning American composer Elena Ruehr, specially commissioned by the New Orchestra of Washington (NOW). Conductor Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez leads the small-size symphony with the big, full sound, as they also perform works by living contemporary composers, including Rodion Shchedrin's Suite from Carmen, as well as Arvo Part's Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, at the JCC of Greater Washington. Thompson is a founding member and currently serves as the artistic director of the Boston Chamber Music Society, and he and Ruehr both teach at MIT. Come early for a pre-concert chat with the composer and stick around after for a reception with the artists.
