Almost anything can be improved with music, as evidenced by tuba-accompanied balcony serenades, operatic State of the Union addresses, and yodeled bank statements. Tune your ears to the sweet sounds on stage with today's Groupon: for $15, you get one ticket to the 11th annual Satchmo Club Strut, a jazz-club crawl on Frenchmen Street (a $30 value). The festival begins at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 5, and musical performances last through 2 a.m.
Each year, the Satchmo Club Strut closes Frenchmen Street to vehicular traffic and welcomes jazz jonesers for a full night of live performances and festivities. With today's Groupon, strutters receive a general-access wristband that grants access to every club or venue to watch performers evoke the spirit of Louis Armstrong. Sidle up to the bar at Blue Nile for the horn-fueled rhythms of the Hot 8 Brass Band, or watch jazz legend Allen Toussaint effortlessly juggle musical genres and chainsaws at the open-air Red Stripe Stage in Jane Alley. While walking between stages, the Treme Brass Band and Free Agents Brass Band will ramble up and down the block to serenade attendees and provide soundtracks to parties spilling onto the street.
Proceeds from the Satchmo Club Strut benefit the nonprofit New Orleans Jazz Celebration and its efforts to promote and preserve jazz music through educational outreach. Initiated by the Louisiana Music Commission in 1993, the NOJC advocates America's greatest art form by staging public exhibits, sponsoring international exchanges for promising artists, and holding regular "informances" at local schools, which are found more complete than early attempts at "perforations."
