As one of the top professional orchestras in California, the New West Symphony brings a concert brimming with mystery, magic, and lucid dreams to the historic, art-deco-styled Barnum Hall. Boris Brott conducts each performance with experience and gusto. Attendees of East Meets West will be treated to George Gao's skillful wielding of the erhu, a violin-like Chinese instrument with a drum-like body made of bamboo and snakeskin. Emanating a haunting tone, the erhu has been featured in the musical scores of films such as The Hurt Locker, Star Trek, and Pirates of the Caribbean, among others. Soiree Romantique features the skilled Andrew von Oeyen, skillfully tickling the piano's ivory. George Gao and Andrew von Oeyen will perform in three pieces, and they will also be in attendance at their respective post-concert receptions, providing an excellent opportunity for Etch A Sketch enthusiasts to carefully capture the likeness of each.
VCStar.com offers this rave review of a recent performance by New West Symphony:
- The earth shook a notch when New West Symphony performed Anton Bruckner’s massive Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Major on March 5 at the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center. – Rita Moran
