George Gershwin composed some of the most well-known American standards and jazz classics of all time, and now you can hear his most beloved music performed by New West Symphony with conductor Marcelo Lehninger at the Barnum Hall in Santa Monica. An American in Paris, a jazz-influenced symphonic poem, was inspired by the time Gershwin spent in Paris and has the energy of the French capital in the 1920s. Porgy and Bess, while initially unpopular thanks to its racially charged theme, is now one of the best-known and most frequently performed operas in America. Along with these famous works, you'll also hear music from French composer Maurice Ravel, known as one of the greatest in the 1920s and '30s. Hear his jazz-influenced Piano Concerto in G, performed by pianist Denis Kozhukhin, and Suite No. 2 from Daphnis et Chloe, a passionate ballet about the love between a goatherd and a shepherdess. You may recognize this music if you're a figure skating fan, in 2002 American Sarah Hughes won gold at the Olympics skating to selections from Daphnis et Chloe.
