New-York Historical Society

To fully experience New York, you have to fully embrace its history. Founded in 1804, the New-York Historical Society brings four centuries to life through engaging exhibitions and collections. Tucked across the street from Central Park, the museum welcomes visitors with historical artifacts, film, and other media. Quirky, smart, and manageable in just a couple of hours, the museum paints a layered picture of not just New York City's history, but that of the nation as a whole

  • Great Start: New York Story, a panoramic film experience, captures 400 years of the city's history in just 18 minutes
  • History, Visually Speaking: Image-heavy special exhibits include The Hirschfeld Century: The Art of Al Hirschfeld and Art as Activism: Graphic Art from the Merrill C. Berman Collection
  • Permanent Mainstay: New York Rising, featuring relics from the Revolutionary War, such as George Washington’s inauguration chair, and the pistols used in the Hamilton-Burr duel
  • Eye Catchers: Picasso’s stage curtain for Le Tricorne ballet and the ceiling mural from Keith Haring's Pop Shop
  • Future History-Makers: DiMenna Children's History Museum, with games and interactive exhibits
  • Pro Tip: Catch top historians and public figures many weeknights as part of the museum's lecture series. Separate tickets are required, but past recordings are available for free online.
  • Make it a Date: Caffè Storico on the museum's first floor offers lunch, dinner and cocktails

Customer Reviews

Be sure to watch the documentary on the history of NY; short and entertaining and a nice opportunity to sit comfortably for a few minutes! The building was immaculate and super friendly staff.

Several exhibits and good film about NYC.

There were a couple great exhibits there when we went in March 2017. Tattoos and Mohammad Ali. We really enjoyed them both. Location is great; next to the Museum of Natural History and on Central Park.
