Newport Landing Whale Watching

In summer 2014, Newport Landing Whale Watching tour-goers saw more than 1,200 blue whales, a particularly impressive feat as giant blue whales were once rare sights in Southern California. But now the annual giant blue whale migration brings hundreds upon hundreds of blue whales to the waters off Newport Beach—right where Newport Landing’s vessels are waiting.

Passengers and their cameras await the magnificent creatures aboard three different boats: the Ocean Explorer, Nautilus, and Western Pride. Captains with decades of experience point out the blue whales, which can stretch up to 90 feet long and are the largest of all animals. Along with the blue whales, groups can catch glimpses of the second largest whale in the world, the finback whale. These creatures, along with other types of whales, inhabit the Southern California waters the same months as the blue whales. Watchers also frequently spot giant pods of common and bottlenose dolphins, which often come within arm’s length of the boats.

Just outside of Newport Bay lies one of the largest marine sanctuaries in Southern California—a space that covers more than 15 miles and provides a haven for these whales and dolphins. It stretches along the scenic Newport Beach and Laguna Beach coastline, where very calm waters make the perfect conditions for whale-watching adventures.

Customer Reviews

Very worthwhile trip! We got to see a gray whale up close for a considerable amount of time. Then we saw a large school of dolphins that dove playfully in our wake - and finally a group of sea lions as we entered the harbor. The crew was friendly and informative.
