A Chat with NOLA Aikido
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
We teach a martial art of peace for everybody. Aikido is not just about defeating an attacker. It’s about mastering yourself and finding more peace and stability in your life. It’s about learning to solve problems creatively both on the mats and in the rest of your life.
Exercise is challenging. How do you keep clients motivated and engaged?
We make practice fun. We work toward our next belts. We provide five extra weekend seminars each year in our dojo with instructors from around the world. We give a lot of individualized attention. And older students are always on hand to help newer students. We all progress together.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
After Katrina, I felt called back from Sweden to my native Louisiana to be part of the recovery of our weird, funky, irreplaceable corner of the globe. I wanted to share this art of peace with a city which has been through so much and which already offers so much joy and wild revelries.
What do you love most about your job?
Seeing people learn and grow in their practice, feeling everyone making progress. And at the same time, continuing to hone my own skills and practice. I love that there is no end to this, that we can always learn more and keep progressing.
