North Hills Community Outreach: $10 Donation to Help Buy Soil for Community Garden

The Issue: Organic Soil Needed to Foster Fruit Trees' Growth

Last year, food pantry volunteers for North Hills Community Outreach planted 25 fruit trees in NHCO’s community gardens. Ideally, these fruit trees will eventually yield fresh, organic produce that can be donated to the more than 1,400 families who rely on North Hill’s two local food pantries. To foster growth of the fruit trees, the organization needs organic soil and mulch.

The Campaign: Growing Fruit Trees with Help of Organic Soil

All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by North Hills Community Outreach to supply the Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden with organic soil and mulch—components that foster the growth of fruit trees. The organic produce yielded from these trees will then be distributed across North Hills Community Outreach’s two food pantries. For every $300 raised, North Hills Community Outreach can provide organic soil and mulch for 25 fruit trees.

North Hills Community Outreach

Working toward the vision that no one in Northern Allegheny County should be hungry, cold, or alone, North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) assists those dealing with hardship and poverty through a variety of services. These services include free computer training, utility assistance, college scholarships for non-traditional students, and emergency financial help. Thanks to the volunteers who work in the Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden—a community-based, organic garden—NHCO has helped grow and share fresh produce at its two area food pantries. In 2012, the garden produced approximately 4,500 pounds of organic food.
