Though a Segway is a practical way to transport one's self over mountainous terrain, it doesn't provide the engaging conversation that only a horse can deliver. Today's Groupon puts you back in the saddle: for $45, you get a half-day horseback ride (a $90 value) from North Mountain Outfitter.
Escape the blaring horns and roving bands of gymnasts that congest the city streets for a freeing day-trip to the scenic Shenandoah Valley. A half-day horseback ride at the North Mountain Outfitter in Swoope, near Staunton, will place you atop an experienced equine companion for a 4- to 6-mile ride through the trails of the picturesque mountains. Tourees are rounded into small, intimate groups and led on horseback up moderate inclines and across rushing water. Each tour is led by a locally raised tour guide who is intimately familiar with the terrain and adept at regaling riders with countryside anecdotes, repairing modems, and locating idyllic spots for scenic views. The ride will include a few brief breaks for leg stretching and sustenance soaking, and a cowboy-inspired snack will be provided.
Novice riders and experienced horse-whisperers alike are welcome on the half-day ride; no experience is necessary because each group will be briefly briefed on equine safety prior to departure. Riders are advised to come adorned in layers of seasonally appropriate apparel, because the temperature from sun to shade and trail to trail can range up to 15 degrees, and tours are led rain or shine. Close-toed shoes and a nature-admiring attitude are recommended. Call ahead to schedule your adventure. For more information on what to bring and policies, see here.
Riders must be 10 years of age or older, and cannot weigh more than 245 pounds.
