$49 for 10 Drop-In Sheroes Boot-Camp Classes ($200 Value)
Misho Ceko and Andrew Bowers, a Gracie-trained black belt and US Marine Corps Martial Arts Instructor, respectively, meld martial arts with fitness and functional-training drills during women's-only Sheroes boot camp. After a brief warm-up, students pair up and cycle through a series of non-contact jabs culled from krav maga, boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and self-defense schools. Afterward, guests run, jump, and lift through a regimen that conditions muscles by mirroring real-life movements. Each session caps its attendance at 20 guests, all of whom can borrow or purchase boxing gloves, hand wraps, and kazoos for playing the theme song from Rocky during workouts. Classes begin on March 5, and patrons may not join more than one class per day.
Northside Mixed Martial Arts
Northside Mixed Martial Arts acquaints all willing students—most of whom have never sparred or grappled—with the proven combat techniques of Gracie jiu-jitsu, submission wrestling, muay thai kickboxing, and MMA in a supportive and secure environment. The center's squad of expert coaches includes Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion and Gracie-trained black belt Misho Ceko, as well as two-time Golden Gloves boxer Ivelin Tzontchev. By showcasing strikes and holds from across the martial-arts spectrum, classes instill a base of knowledge from which guests can improvise and adapt to subdue much larger opponents, such as street toughs, hooligans, and rabid Big Birds. The gym rounds out its class roster with personal-training services and women's self-defense boot camps, and beckons to passersby a mere four blocks away from the Fullerton CTA stop.
