Today’s side deal combines the shredding skills of a surfer with the horsepower of a surfer’s jealous friend, the motorboat. For $60, you get a one-hour wake-boarding lesson for up to four riders from Northwest Riders ($100 value for one to two riders, $120 value for three to four riders). Call ahead to schedule your group lesson, available by appointment seven days a week sunup to sundown from mid-May until the season ends in mid-September 2010. Groups meet on the northern docks of Lake Washington in Kenmore.
If you’ve never stood on top of water, or if you’ve stood on it and want to further defy the laws of viscosity and velocity, then strap in to Northwest Riders’ line of Slingshot Sports boards and bindings, designed to give you a blend of comfort and performance that most only experience during sleeping-bag races. As you’re towed along by a 21-foot Malibu vRide boat, the experienced nautical navigators on board will tame the wake to fit your desired degree of difficulty.
Part owner and resident wake-raker Greg Young—a former member of a collegiate national champion club—brings 14 years of riding experience and five years of coaching experience to the table, along with a casual patience for the sport’s wavy learning curve. With a pressure-free environment, you’ll be able to suit up and set sail on the motor-made seas just as Mother Nature probably intended.
