The Issue: Increased Need at DC-Area Nonprofits
One in eight District households struggles with food insecurity, according to D.C. Hunger Solutions. Food insecurity, a term defined by the US Department of Agriculture, indicates a limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food for a household. As such, area nonprofits such as Capital Area Food Bank have reported a dramatic increase in people seeking food assistance. With a sustainable food source, these nonprofits could ensure a regular supply of fresh produce for their clients.
The Campaign: Providing Gardening Systems to Area Nonprofits
If 40 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then Earth Starter can distribute four of its Nourishmat gardening systems to area nonprofits. A Nourishmat gardening system includes 82 preplanted seed balls with 19 plant varieties, a fully assembled Nourishmat with a built-in irrigation system, and a planting-guide curriculum. Each additional $100 raised will be used to distribute another Nourishmat gardening system to a local nonprofit. Donors who contribute $15 or more can choose from four different seedball packages including spinach, onion, arugula, and salad bowl lettuce. Shipping is an additional $1.99.
One Nourishmat can provide 30 pounds or more of healthy produce each growing cycle, which can then be distributed to families in need. Additionally, using the Nourishmat square-foot gardening-method curriculum, local food partners can teach clients the skills necessary to grow their own produce.
Earth Starter wants to turn every food consumer into a food producer. To do this, its team created Nourishmat, an innovative gardening system that rethinks the concept of home gardening. With Nourishmat, no digging or gardening tools are necessary. Instead, the low-maintenance system uses seed balls for no-till gardening, and with a simple hose connection, its drip-irrigation design efficiently and easily delivers water to the growing plants.
The ultimate goal of Earth Starter’s founders is to bring sustainable living to all Americans, whether they live in an apartment complex or a private home. By helping provide a nutritious food supply (along with flowers, herbs, and other vegetation), Earth Starter products help people adapt to economic constraints while also participating in the larger effort to ensure a sustainable food supply and a healthy planet for the future.
