What You'll Get
Well-made art, like freestyle kitchen demolition, can imbue viewers with new perspectives on the outside world. Celebrate the exuberant powers of expression with today's Groupon: for $125, you get admission to any 2011 child or youth summer camp from the School of Extended Studies at Nova Scotia College of Art & Design (up to a $295 value).
Boasting 124 years of experience in fine-arts instruction, Nova Scotia College of Art & Design trains artistic eyes and hands in courses for university students as well as adults and youths. The School of Extended Studies' summer camps engage apprentice artisans ages 5 and up with 14 myriad art and design courses held during six age-specific, week-long sessions. Wee ones draw inspiration from the briny deep in Mixed Media classes (ages 5–8), employing collage, painting, sculpture, and eight-armed assistants to craft nautically themed works of art. Computer Animation courses (ages 9–11, 12–14) apply traditional technique to drawing software such as Adobe Photoshop and Apple iMovie, and pencil wielders breathe action into illustrated characters in Creative Comics and Graphic Novels (ages 9–11, 12–14) as they learn basics of storytelling, composition, and panelling. Based on NSCAD requirements, Portfolio Preparation Intensive classes (ages 15+) train design disciples to preen their pieces for first-year-credit visual-arts study applications with the aid of studio exercises and one-on-one instructor schooling. The intensive also includes a tour of the college facilities and the grove of wild paintbrushes.
Recent NSCAD graduates and other expert art instructors coach students in proper canvas wrangling within the college's hallowed 19th-century halls and modern studios. Small class sizes, most capped at 12 students, grant opportunities for focused group work, individual attention, and forming motivational human pyramids. Check summer-camp course schedules for session dates.
