What You'll Get
In the Victorian era, extreme sports were limited to teatime without doilies, writing witty satires about earnestness, and riding a pennyfarthing down a mild incline. Today's Groupon would shock such staid sensibilities: for $35, you get a zip-line adventure at Ocoee Zipz (a $79 value). The land of Ocoee Zipz is located in Ocoee, Tennessee, roughly 2.5 hours north of Atlanta.
Spanning more than 40 wooded acres, Ocoee Zipz takes jonesing adrenaline junkies on a mile-long canopy tour that reaches heights of up to 74 feet and speeds of up to 45 miles per hour. As you traverse the Wizard of Oz themed course's seven features, you'll zoom from the 30-foot open-field "Cowardly Lion" into the forested "Dorothy." As the trees rush past you on both sides, seemingly within inches, you'll surf the arboreal air between "Toto," "Tin Man," and "The Wicked Witch of the West," plus a small footstool known as "The Munchkin." As you soar like a mad flying monkey, you'll spot raccoons, deer, and bears far below. Finally, conquer the vertiginous 65-foot panorama of "The Wizard." By the time you alight on solid ground, you'll have experienced the most satisfying forest-based thrill outside of hunting ewoks from helicopters.
Professional guides ensure that thrill-seekers are thoroughly prepared for the day's adventure. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment––helmets, harnesses, gloves, and billowing cape. Like most fun activities regulated by state law, you must be at least 5 years old and weigh between 40 and 275 pounds to ride the zipline. Before embarking, you'll need to sign a waiver. The course is open 7 days a week, 12 months a year.
- At Ocoee Outdoors, thrill seekers looking for an elevated rush instead of one on whitewater can suspend themselves up to 74 feet above the ground tethered to a few pieces of rope and slide on a wire less than one-half inch thick. – Hyun Chung, Knoxville News Sentinel
