Live theatre tends to be more thrilling than film, largely due to the heightened odds of seeing someone flub a line or deliver a stirring monologue while sitting in your lap. Vicariously live the free-wheeling thespian life with today’s Groupon to Odyssey Theatre, performing outdoors in Strathcona Park. Choose between the following options:
- For $24, you get two tickets to The Fan (a $48 value).
- For $39, you get two tickets to The Fan, plus two adult and two kids' tickets to The Flying Canoe, presented by Rag & Bone Puppet Theatre (a $78 value).
The Fan runs July 21–August 21, Tuesday–Sunday at 8 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 3 p.m. The Flying Canoe is a limited engagement playing Wednesdays July 27, August 3, August 10, and August 17 at 1 p.m. General-admission bleacher seating begins 30 minutes before each show.
Celebrating 25 years of outdoor theatre in Strathcona Park, Odyssey Theatre explores human existence through masks, intense physicality, vibrant costuming, and by weaving text with music, dance, and fairground arts. Continuing its international repertoire of award-winning productions, Odyssey produces Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni's The Fan, a comedy that lifts the veneer off of small-town life and plunges its characters into gossip, misconceptions, fisticuffs, and heated arguments about axial versus propeller fans. Juxtaposed against this raucousness is Rag & Bone Puppet Theatre's The Flying Canoe, rooted in the French Canadian story written in 1900 by Honoré Beaugrand. Magical creatures, including a talking cat and a bear in a canoe who longs to own a kayak, blend French and English, early film footage, folksongs, and dance to spin the myths and legends of the first Canadian settlers. There is limited space available for lawn chairs at each show, and light snacks and refreshments are available for purchase or juggling.
