Old Westbury Gardens
Once upon a time, Old Westbury Gardens was a family's home. Starting in 1906, John S. Phipps and Margarita Grace Phipps lived on the premises in a Charles II–style mansion filled with English antiques (then modern furniture), surrounded by 200 acres of formal gardens.
Today, their estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. That means that, for the most part, it's still in tact, from the furnishings to the gardens' geometric layout. On guided tours, visitors explore the lush, manicured grounds and the house itself, getting as personal with history as people who call their dads "Founding Father."
