What You'll Get
Today's Groupon bathes your fingers in the sweet and savory sauce Matthew McConaughey uses to grease the axles of his perpetual-motion machine made of meat. For $10, you get $20 worth of mouthwatering comfort food and drinks at Ole Time Barbecue on either Hillsborough Street or Pine Winds Drive. The sauce at Ole Time Barbecue, which comes from a secret family recipe, has made the small restaurant a mecca for lovers of North Carolina–style barbecue.
Owners Jerry and Kathy Hart opened Ole Time Barbecue in 1993; for Jerry, it was the fruition of a meaty dream. As a small child he helped his grandfather Quillie cook barbecue, learning patience as well as the family recipe in the slow-cooking process. The menu stands as a testament to Quillie's traditions. Classic dinners such as the hand-chopped barbecue pork plate and barbecue chicken, fried chicken, and country-style steak (all items $6.99 regular, $7.99 large) please any palate. Combination dinners are available for $9.99 each; all dinners are served with two sides (choose from Southern classics such as fried apple sticks, fried okra, and collards) and Ole Time's famously delicious hushpuppies. For morning birds, breakfast is available from 6 a.m.–10 a.m.
The Harts are on a first-name basis with much of their loyal customer base, many of whom can be seen digging into a plate of barbecue on Ole Time's new-timey photo gallery. The restaurant's tiny interior is warm and homey, a bit like a grandparent's kitchen if that grandparent was made from pork and put pig paintings and pig stuffed animals in his or her kitchen made of pork. Ole Time's slogan is "a great place to get porked."
- I love good and I mean good Carolina BBQ, you know the type - pulled or chopped pork slowly cooked and then loaded up with a vinegar and red pepper seasoning. Ole Time BBQ is like that. – M. W., Insider Pages
- Finding a place to eat that has good homestyle cooked meals are few and far between. OTB has been a place for us to relax while enjoying the food and company. Some of our favorite meals have been the chicken pastry, hamburgers, meatloaf, BBQ chicken and of course BBQ pork. Our youngest son loves the plate sized pancakes and sausage! The service is consistently quick and friendly. – The Catfish, Citysearch
- Ole Time is such a ROCKIN place!!!! I Love [sic] the fresh Veggie Plates and Hushpuppies - yum, yum! – punkrockfeminist, Citysearch
