Dramatists breathe new life into classic literature by adapting them for the stage, as was done with Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, Frank L. Baum's The Wizard of Oz, and Upton Sinclair's Grease. See book-based dramatics with today's Groupon: for $12, you get one general-admission ticket to the Variety Children's Theatre's production of Oliver! (a $25 value) at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on University Boulevard. Choose one of the following two performances:
- Friday, October 15, at 9 a.m.
- Saturday, October 16, at 8 p.m.
Oliver! is the second production of the Variety Children's Theatre, a company that gives children with and without disabilities the opportunity to work with theater professionals. The Touhill Performing Arts Center seats up to 1,600 ticket holders, and the seats will either be in the orchestra or parterre areas, with availability based on a first-come, first-served basis. Tony-nominated director Lara Teeter leads a company of talented children and adults in this story of a young orphan cast onto the streets of Victorian London, tangled within a gaggle of child pickpockets, and forced to lift handfuls of gruel from the pockets of wealthy barristers. A full orchestra shepherds enthralled flocks of spectators along this melodious journey of drama and spectacle.
Proceeds will benefit the St. Louis chapter of Variety the Children's Charity. Founded in 1928, the charity provides services and opportunities to children with disabilities from infancy to adulthood at 43 chapters in 13 countries. The theater program offers experiential lessons in all aspects of theatrical production, from acting and choreography, to set construction and lighting design, to communicating through soup cans with playwrights locked in their own dressing rooms.
