VZ-Day: Rise of the Zompires
Olympia had never even held a shotgun before VZ-Day. No one knew if a zombie had bitten a vampire or if a vampire had bitten a zombie, but it didn’t matter now. The Zompires were here to stay. Surviving VZ-Day was a crash course in survival of the fittest, but every day since has been a reminder that no one lives forever.
She stepped softly down the empty streets as a reedy wind rolled between the crumbling buildings like broken music, carrying with it a looming storm that daubed the city in grayish green. Click.
She spun, nearly losing her signature purple afro-pick, to speak nothing of her cool. She cocked the shotgun at the emptiness where the sound had emanated from. Even the wind took a moment of silence to make her feel small and uncertain. Then again, behind her: Click.
She turned slowly this time, knowing she was being toyed with, knowing that an extra inch in any direction and she was already dead. They had her to rights, surprised and defenseless, and every additional second of life was either a gift…or a game. She whirled to face her pursuer, and had her answer.
The Head Zompire stood before her, cracked and pallid like a homemade man left to dry in the sun. His robes were the color of marrow; his eyes, balls of old milk. He spoke, and the voice was the purest concentration of the death and rankness that enveloped them.
“Why do you reject my love?” it said. Olympia wouldn’t get another chance, and she knew it.
“Sugar,” she cocked her shotgun. “Because you’re so darn ugly.”
