The Terrace Room at The Omni William Penn Hotel
Since opening in 1916, the Terrace Room at the Omni William Penn Hotel has maintained its luster, and still stands as one of the city's great culinary institutions. The Pittsburgh City Paper reflected on this reputation a few years back, calling the establishment "one of the last local bastions of old-school restaurateur-ship." And that goes far beyond its complimentary valet service.
Part of the destination's timelessness can be attributed to the largely original art-deco architecture: coffered ceilings, mirrored columns, and towering archways that frame crimson booths. But the classic menu also plays a large role, centering on steaks and cuts that range from an 8-ounce filet to an entire rack of lamb. Though most of the other dishes are European in style (think housemade agnolotti), the City Paper praised the gumbo for standing out with "a complex spiciness that compounded with every spoonful." The Terrace Room also offers wine service with a list that's arranged from lighter, sweeter varietals to drier and stronger ones.
