Before radio, music was broadcast via Morse code, which turned everything into a treble-heavy dance music punctuated by demands to STOP. Limber up for more graceful dance moves with today’s Groupon: for $50, you get 10 dance classes at Ooh La La Dance Company in La Jolla (up to a $200 value).
Helmed by acclaimed light-tripper Salsa Susie, ranked 15th best salsa and cabaret dancer by ESPN, the similarly accomplished team of professional shimmiers at Ooh La La schools fancy feet of all experience levels in a variety of dance styles. Swivel through any 10 of Ooh La La’s core repertoire classes, including salsa, burlesque, flamenco, bachata and the Peanuts gang bump 'n' grind. Pre-teens (ages 9–13) can master plies and swan impersonations in the ballet class, and their preschool counterparts (ages 4–5) can hone their toddling skills in the salsa class. Each session is designed for drop-ins and lasts from 30 minutes to three hours.
Ooh La La Dance Company’s classes are held in the Firehouse YMCA La Jolla. Under the guidance of expert instructors, including Joanna who has pounded the floorboards on Broadway and worked as a backup dancer for Hilary Duff, pupils glide across the 4,000-square-foot studio in two dance rooms, one of which has its clock permanently set to Hammer Time.
Ooh La La Dance Academy
"Music is my diet and dance feeds my soul," says "Salsa Susie" Ngyen, who quit a six-figure career at Xerox to start Ooh La La Dance Academy—in the midst of an economic crisis. Her risk paid off, because since then, the company's dance troop, the Cosabellas, earned the title of Best 2010 Performing Artist of the Year by Raw Artist and sparkled onstage for celebrity judges during a live-taping of America's Got Talent in 2011.
The Cosabellas not only entertain; they share their enthusiasm of dance with others by teaching kids and adult dance classes at Ooh La La Dance Academy. Boasting over 15 years of experience each, the instructors teach the dance they pioneered, a blend of Latin and burlesque, as well as fitness-inspired classes and classical dance forms such as ballet and The Beethoven Shuffle.
