Included on Ola Fendert's menu for Oola is a quote from Jim Carrey: "Behind every great man is a woman rolling her eyes." They're apropos words for a chef who doesn't seem to take himself too seriously. Instead, Ola has fun with an expansive menu that delights diners at any time of day. As the San Francisco Bay Guardian put it, Fendert is a man who makes "playful use of luxury and offbeat ingredients"—he doesn't hesitate to pair beef carpaccio with potato chips or dress up gravy-soaked meatballs with lingonberries and celery-root purée.
The restaurant itself strikes a similar balance between upscale and playful. Designed by award-winning architect Suhil Shatara, the space features reclaimed wood, plush banquettes, and gleaming gold wallpaper stretched across 18-foot ceilings. But the elegant setting doesn't stop late-night DJs from spinning Beastie Boys records as guests snack on ribs and draft beer. When not pouring out drafts, the bartenders are often mixing up specialty cocktails such as watermelon cosmos or shooters of tequila, bloody mary mix, and PBR.
