During Opera Vista's fourth-annual festival, contemporary opera composers from four different countries battle it out in an American Idol esque competition lasting four nights. Six conductors will warm up their batons during the semi-finals on Wednesday, March 16, facing off in front of a large, opera-seeking audience and a panel of expert judges. After modern-day Mozarts provide previews of their operatic oeuvre, the festival audience will vote to determine who will advance. Enjoy a competition intermission on Thursday night, when musicians will pleasantly present an evening of noncontentious chamber music, while secretly poking each other with violin bows under their seats.
Finalists will feud in the final round on Friday, when judgmental audiences will cast their vote for the competition conqueror. The fourth and final evening features the Texas debut of last year's competition winner, And Then I Remember, which recollects the struggle of life during World War II–ravaged Estonia, plus the unveiling of the evening's iPad-raffle winner. Seating throughout the competition is based on a first-come, first-served basis.
