Boot camps are a quick way to get in shape for upcoming marathons or adrenaline-pumping prison escapes. Jump the fence with today's Groupon: for $49, you get two weeks of unlimited boot-camp classes and a physical-fitness test at Optimal Health and Fitness (up to a $255 total value).
Optimal Health and Fitness' outdoor boot camps combine the motivational wisdom of fitness instructors, the strength-building strain of comprehensive, varied workout routines, and the scenic beauty of some of Mother Nature's favorite local hangouts. Before starting the boot-camp training, the physical-fitness test establishes each health hunter's strength, endurance, speed, and flexibility to track their overall progress throughout their workouts. Campers then choose from a multitude of muscle-building sessions from OHF's schedule, and crunch out a few calories in such lovely locales as Seacliff Beach and Anna Jean Cummings Park. The small-group training helps participants meet their fitness goals, and the outdoor environment enhances the connection between the mind and body often distracted by the mirrored walls and dense perspiration clouds in plain workout studios.
Five Yelpers give Optimal Health and Fitness a perfect five-star average:
- The trainers are both challenging and kind, and they support bootcampers in our goals, even when we're tired and not so interested in our goals ourselves. – Mandie S., 9/30/10
- This is such a unique and amazing class--calling it a class, does not do it justice! We are so lucky to have it here in Santa Cruz! – monica v., 10/18/10
Optimal Health and Fitness
Whenever she strolled down a sandy beach or marveled at the redwoods of a lush forest, LeTa Jussila would be reminded that Santa Cruz was the most beautiful place in the world. It seemed a shame to her that most people spent so much of their days inside houses and offices rather than taking advantage of the diverse landscapes of their surroundings. Inspired, she spearheaded the foundation of Optimal Health and Fitness—a multidimensional outdoor-fitness program.
Today, LeTa and her staff of trainers conduct energetic weight-loss classes at local beaches, forests, and mountain trails. They use the tools of their surroundings as exercise equipment, such as running up park stairs for a cardio workout. Encouraging well-rounded, healthy lifestyles, the instructors also conduct seminars on holistic topics such as stress management and meditation. Nutrition specialists, meanwhile, provide students with balanced meal plans and supervise detoxifying cleanses. The staff also offers various treatments popularized in the East, including traditional Chinese acupuncture treatments and rejuvenating qi gong stretching classes.
