30-minute earthen training session prepares novice gliders to float through 2,500 feet of South Florida sky with certified instructor
Man was never meant to fly, as exemplified by his lack of wings and penchant for bathing in cement. Defy nature with today’s Groupon: for $89, you get a tandem sky ride from Orlando Hang Gliding, located at The Florida Ridge Air Sports Park in Clewiston (a $179 value).
For more than 25 years, Orlando Hang Gliding has trained wind-bound wannabes in the aerial arts. The Pilot tandem sky ride commences after 30 minutes of terra-firma-planted training, during which students learn the basics of how to operate their gliders. Next, each flier launches 2,500 feet into the South Florida skies under the wing of a USHPA-certified instructor, watching carefully as he guides them through proper flying technique and offers helpful tips, such as how to spot a traffic cop hiding behind a cloud. The instructor then relinquishes control, allowing new aviators to get in some hands-on atmosphere explorations as they finally discover what it's like to live life as giant man-birds. Rides take place Friday–Monday from sunrise to sunset, and each customers can tote home a full video and photo documentation of their sojourn into weightlessness for an additional fee (not covered by today's Groupon).
If, at a future date, Groupon holders decide to enroll in Orlando Hang Gliding's full pilot-training program, which aims to teach students how to launch and fly gliders without assistance, the full value of today's Groupon ($179) will be deducted from the $1,695 program fee.
