What You'll Get
The history of theater goes all the way back to the 1970s, when audiences were eager to see "living movies." See how far these unfilmed talkabouts have come in only 40 years with today's Groupon: for $35, you get two tickets to a performance and two glasses of wine or beer at Orlando Shakespeare Theater (up to an $84 value). This deal is eligible for the following performances:
- The Importance of Being Earnest, running from Wednesday, September 14, until Sunday, October 9, in Margeson Theater
- God of Carnage, running from Wednesday, October 12, until Sunday, November 13, in Goldman Theater
- Cymbeline, running from Wednesday, February 8, 2012, until Sunday, March 18, in Margeson Theater
Housed in the John and Rita Lowndes Shakespeare Center in Loch Haven Park, Orlando Shakespeare Theater produces classics, contemporary plays and theater for young audiences. Don a top hat and opt to experience Oscar Wilde's iconic farce, The Importance of Being Earnest, which examines the bizarre practices of Victorian courtship, etiquette, and taco stuffing. During the 140-minute production, two young bachelors spin a web of lies and manipulations in the hopes of courting two quick-witted young women. Winner of the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play, Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage acts as a portrait of parenthood, taking place during a casual playground discussion-turned-verbal-tirade between two couples. This 90-minute comedy is recommended for mature audiences only, as it contains occasional moments of profanity and adult discussions of tax-code bylaws. Otherwise, Cymbeline allows audiences to lose themselves in Shakespeare's tragic, yet romantic telling of a daughter cast from her father's court on false charges of adultery. Crowd members will gasp, cry, and spasmodically giggle as Imogen sets out on an odyssey to renew her honor and reunite with her true love. This production revolves around mature themes and may not be suitable for young audiences or carelessly accusatory monarchs.
