What You'll Get

In its earliest stages, airbrush technology was used solely for magazine cover models, deceased-rapper t-shirts, and makeup for the cast of Cats. But when airpaints shot to $93 a barrel in 2000 following the dot-com bubble burst, airbrush artistry became financially unviable. A drought of airbrush artists resulted in finger-paint-based photo retouching, shirtless Tupac fans, and the renaming of Cats to Humans. At the 2008 International CO2-Based Design Conference, out-of-work airbrush artists finally discovered a profitable solution: airbrush tanning. They immediately went back to work, delighting the millions of Americans patiently waiting for sunless, streak-free tanning options.
For a mere $25, you can get an Ortanic airbrush-tanning treatment at the Lincoln Park Equinox Fitness Club, 1750 N. Clark St. (free validated parking available across the street for up to two hours). Today’s Groupon is a great way to get ready for the beach, so bring friends and get a group tan using the experimental fire-hose application.
Ortanic is a new kind of UV-free airbrush tan that’s temporary and natural-looking, as opposed to other airbrush tans that are permanent and give you an appearance of a well-oiled leather jacket. With an Ortanic tan, a licensed professional will create and apply a custom-blended color to give you a look that fits your skin color. What’s the difference between an Ortanic tan and other airbrush tans or tanning lotions?
- No smell
- No stain
- No streak
- No orange
- No seafood flavor
- No painful hallucinations
Plus, you can rest easy knowing you’ll avoid harmful sun exposure and that Ortanic gives 5% of its proceeds to skin-cancer research. Look good this summer without the danger of UV rays. Get your Groupon.
Since Ortanic is a new company, there aren’t many user reviews. However, NBCchicago.com called it “amazing” and said this:
“We have a new crush, and we’re ready to tell all. Who doesn’t want to obtain that perfect golden glow, which can be a difficult proposition in a city like Chicago. Now there’s a new product on the market that might, quite literally, change your bronzing habits forever.
“It’s called Ortanic, and it’s nothing short of amazing. We’ve tried Mystic Tan in the past and ended up looking less-than glowing and more like macaroni and cheese. We’ve tried self tanners and spent many nights lathering ourselves with different lotions to come to determine which one is the top runner, followed by many days walking around with different colors stained on our skin.
“But Ortanic is a customized airbrush tan that turns you the most beautiful, natural color – even for the lightest (or darkest) of skin. The process begins when you walk into the spa at Equinox in Lincoln Park. First timers are asked to fill out a form that gives the airbrush specialist an idea of your skin type. From there, you step into a room, strip down to your skivvies (ah yes, no shame) and let the airbrush artist mix your customized tanning ‘cocktail.’”

According to the founders of Ortanic, it seemed there'd always been a few problems with airbrush tans. They smelled. They left streaks and orange tints. The results were inconsistent. To fix these common complaints, Ortanic's visionaries took matters into their own sun-dappled hands. After extensive research, they developed their own approach to airbrush tanning, concocting a proprietary formula to address streaks and incorporating an air-purification system to keep the extraction booths clear of particles. In January of 2009—just in time for Chicago's beach season—the first location opened.
Since then, Ortanic has expanded into four locations across Chicago. Inside each, licensed skin consultants work closely with clients to select, blend, and apply custom blends to fit their skin tone. The resulting glow lasts seven to ten days—just long enough for a trip to Alpha Centauri to try tanning under another sun for a change. Clients can also take advantage of the two hours of free parking and complimentary day access to Fitness Formula Club on the day of their service.
