The early Greeks believed that in wine, there is truth, which explains why the ancient manuscripts of many philosophers are covered in grape stains and repeatedly mention cravings for french toast. Taste wine in a more refined manner than Party Hardy Plato with today's Groupon: for $18, you get a wine tasting for two (a $10 value) and $30 toward a wine purchase at Otis Kenyon Wine's tasting room in Woodinville.
A local winery with a legendary family history that dates back to the early 1900s, Otis Kenyon bottles enticing bouquets and gratifying flavors with its sustainable, biodiverse approach. The Walla Walla Valley winery specializes in bordeaux and rhone varietals, grown locally and cultivated with ecologically friendly practices in mind to keep the land healthy and prevent the recurrence of California's blues-playing, saxophone-tooting raisins. The expansive tasting room allows grape gurus to swirl and sniff distinct creations as they mingle alongside rustic wine barrels and walls of framed photography, after which pleased palates can pick out a tasty favorite, perhaps the rich 2007 syrah ($30) or the complex 2006 cabernet sauvignon ($34), ideal for savoring at home with steaks, burgers, or a particularly piquant Twinkie.
- Both wines being poured for Passport were stellar. Then, too, there is the fascinating label and the legend behind it. I’ll let the Kenyon family tell their own story – they do it better than I could – but I will tell you that it involves a tragic arson, a long-lost family member, and a happy ending. – Erika Szymanski, Seattle P-I blog
