The second annual Ottawa Tea Festival takes place at the Ottawa Convention Centre on Saturday, December 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
After a welcome from festival organizer and Kimicha Tea founder Kimiko Uriu, attendees can drop by events that include presentations on finding the best black tea, the health benefits of various types of teas, and Indian folk, Bollywood, and Sri Lankan dance performances. At 3 p.m., certified Japanese tea-ceremony conductor Kyoko Kosaki presides over her exacting art, and a Chinese tea presentation by Tao Wu of Tao Tea Leaf follows at 4 p.m. Other speakers include Louise Roberge, president of the Tea Association of Canada, and Yumiko Tsunakawa, an established ikebana artist and instructor. To complement the steamy beverages, exhibitors from Koko Chocolates, Hummingbird Chocolate, Heavenly Honey, and other gourmet producers will also offer tastes of their products. Proceeds from the festival go to benefit Asha for Education Canada, a secular and apolitical non-profit organization that supports educational programs for underprivileged children in India.
Finding the perfect tea requires a sensitive palate. Kimicha's founder Kimiko Uriu has been working endlessly to do that; she selects each one of the shop's many offerings from the hundreds of different teas available in regions like China, India, and Japan. Her skill shows; she's a certified tea specialist and her selections have won awards from the North American Tea Championship.
She's not shy about passing those skills along, though. The shop hosts events that include tastings of new teas and classes that teach students to blend their own teas, pair foods and tea, or try teas from every region of the world. The shop stocks everything newly discovered aficionados might need as well, from ornate serving sets to sleek matcha bowls.

“Other than the fact that the workshop organization should be better, the vendors were great!!!”
