Beginning and ending at Redhook Brewery in Woodinville, this tour sends paddlers down the Sammamish River to soak up the aroma of blackberry bushes and wildflower meadows and catch glimpses of geese, kingfishers, and majestic, undomesticated mountain bikers. After the kayak tour, the Forecasters Pub at the brewery vies with other local dining favorites for adventurers' culinary attentions.

  • $39 for a three-hour Lopez Island sea-kayak tour for one ($79 value)
  • $77 for a three-hour Lopez Island sea-kayak tour for two ($158 value)

Seafarers ferry themselves to Lopez Island, where they are outfitted with double or triple kayaks, personal flotation devices, and basic paddling instructions. As skiffs skirt the shoreline, harbor seals and bald eagles may be seen performing their aerial and aquatic waltzes to the castanets of Dungeness crabs, so bringing a camera is highly recommended.

Outdoor Adventure Center

The Outdoor Adventure Center's wildly experienced guides have led groups off the grid for more than a quarter century, pursuing rugged fun in the scenery and fresh air of mountains, rivers, and coastlines. Explorers at heart, the staff boldly launch kayaks into the ocean around the San Juan Islands and conquer the frothy waters of the scenic Skykomish River, known for its beginner-friendly rapids, migrations of spawning merpeople, pool and drop areas, and breathtaking views of 5,000-foot mountain peaks. Horseback and hiking trips delve into the lush woods, and nature photography excursions pause to celebrate the beauty of the wilderness near Index. The core team of 14 guides takes safety seriously, most with certifications from the American Canoe Association, training in wilderness first aid, CPR, and swiftwater rescue, and life vests tattooed over their chests.

Customer Reviews

Great experience!! I loved seeing the starfish and jellyfish up close!

Dan and "Lime Liam" spend a great deal making sure all guests of all skills levels are well prepared and feel comfortable. This does take away a bit of the total kayak time but I'd rather feel secure and have fun, than to feel I'm kayaking in the hands of an untrained guide. In the end, the time on the water was perfect. Dan seems seasoned in the sport and carefully observes safety as well as enjoyment before and during the tour. We did see some animals: seals, oyster catcher, vultures, and an eagle. While the wildlife is cool, the experience itself kayaking on the ocean on a beautiful sunny day surrounded by amazing scenery is priceless. Dan's tours are in Spencer Spit State Park which is a stunning coastal environment with wetlands that make kayaking on Lopez Island just that extra bit more magical. Outdoor Adventure Center also does kayak rentals and bike rentals for good rates. Lopez Island is easy to get to from Anacortez or any of the other San Juan Islands. Don't think about it; Do It!
