Not your typical "Old MacDonald's" farm type tour.... HOWEVER, very educational, interesting and enjoyable visit to an actual working farm! Took my grandkids, ages 7 & 8, and they learned and had fun at the same time. Amy was amazing with the information she presented. We will visit again and so should you!

The farm was amazing, and the cheese even moreso. P. A. Bowen Farmstead gave an exceptional walking tour of the 'front acreage' including a brief spoken & video introduction, tour of the milking parlor, milk processing facility, and gave instruction on the procedures and processes they used in an extremely fun, interactive way. Even in late winter, the farm itself was thriving and picturesque, and the chill in the air did nothing to temper our enthusiasm for walking the grounds, watching the piglets at play while their grown-up counterparts cleared underbrush in the wooded areas, observing the cattles as they grazed and cared for their newborn calves, and learning about their sustainably cyclic farming practices. Highly recommended.

Sally, the co-owner of this farm is something of a national treasure. A prolific author and a grounded visionary of agriculture, this is one of the few places in DC that are truly worth a visit. Not only can you take a tour of one of a handful of dairies daring to sell raw milk in Maryland but you can come home with a sampling of the fine products lovingly crafted on her farm. I highly recommend asking Sally about any of the questions big or small that come up on the tour, in my experience her answers do not disappoint.

Geat visit led by Sally herself, founder/owner. Incredibly informative, educational on stress of sustainable, regenerative farming. Not as interactive with the animals as my first visit, when we saw the chicken coop and cows "up close," and which were highlights of the visit. On this trip we only saw those from a distance. So, not as memorable or fun, but still a great learning experience.

This is the way a farm should be run. Great job.

About P. A. Bowen Farmstead

All of the Jersey cows at P. A. Bowen Farmstead are named after famed opera characters and singers. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that they're also treated like stars: They're milked each morning and then transferred to a wide-open, protected pasture each day. For owners Geoffrey Morell and Sally Fallon Morell, founding a farm was the next step after creating a nonprofit nutrition-education foundation—and their focus on raising healthy animals and food is evident across each of the property's 95 rolling acres.

Here, they care for a menagerie of livestock using rotational grazing techniques and modern farm technology—eschewing chemicals in favor of organic, bio-dynamic plant and animal care. Pigs root in the nearby forest, hens roam freely or settle into heated tractors in colder weather, and the bull sleeps at the foot of the owners' bed each night.

The farm's real specialty, though, is its dairy processing facility—regulated by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene—which churns out several raw artisan cheeses. Saturday walking tours across the farm unveil the inner workings of the cheese-making process. Further revealing their processes, their regular classes educate guests on topics ranging from processing chickens to animal husbandry.
