Unlike plants—which convert carbon dioxide into oxygen that is freely distributed to one's enemies—paintball guns convert carbon dioxide into sweet, colorful vengeance. Paintball Explosion’s eight fields challenge pigment-slinging players with eclectic obstacles and various game types during all-day open-play sessions. Upon entry, each competitor dons a pair of protective goggles, then charges into the fray, gripping a rented Tippmann 98 Platinum Series marker and a paint-splattered teddy bear for good luck. Lock and load 500 paintballs and march to Code Black Field, a concrete jungle of bunkers with wide spaces between cover, or deploy units to Turmoil Field, a wooded battlefront of defunct vehicles and claustrophobic buildings. Or, evade enemies with slides, rolls, and inscrutable hand signals in the competitive, tournament-specified Indoor Speedball Field, pausing to refresh canisters with unlimited air refills.
Parents and friends of participants can connect to the park-wide WiFi to keep tabs on the conflict zones through a closed-circuit video feed. In between rounds, foot soldiers can scrub down in three locker rooms equipped with showers, or crawl inside potato-chip bunkers to banish hunger at the snack bar. A new on-site bar and grill further entertains fighters with plasma TVs, a variety of libations, and mozzarella sticks fired from a T-shirt cannon.
Paintball Explosion began when a group of paintball fanatics decided to make their dreams a reality and set about designing eight different fields of movie-set quality. Located just a 40-minute drive outside of Chicago, the real-life fantasy land they created includes the sci-fi-inspired, concrete environs of Code Black Field as well as the abandoned amusement-park setting of Biohazard Field.
The expansive facility also sports indoor and outdoor speedball fields for adrenaline-fueled fastness. Between matches, gamers can prepare at heated buildings with locker rooms and showers. With an onsite sports bar and grill, Paintball Explosion makes the paintball haven a place where enthusiasts can discuss the forces of velocity, wind resistance, and the physics of splatter.
