Visiting the PMCA was a wonderful experience; the art exhibits were very beautiful and one was interactive. My disappointment comes from being followed the entire time I was in the Mesuem by one of the workers; I'm almost 24 but can pass for a teenager so I guess this lady was suspicious because I look young?? Either way it was uncomfortable and I left earlier than I wanted because of it.

I thoroughly enjoy this gem of an art space. Hopefully to be discovered by more patrons.

What You'll Get

Since the recent explosion of street vendors selling vials of "authentic" Picasso blood, it's been harder than ever to get close to famous artists. Experience genuine works of art with today’s Groupon: for $3, you get a one-day admission to the Pasadena Museum of California Art (a $7 value for adults, a $5 value for seniors and students), located in the historic Playhouse district.

The Pasadena Museum of California Art presents three stories of thought-provoking exhibits and experimental architecture from the state's palette-armed art-makers. Current exhibits include Megan Geckler: Every Move You Make, Every Step You Take, which features playful multicolored architectural installations, and Desire: Six Los Angeles Artists, including the work of six L.A. artists and their interpretation of the city's propensity for pleasure (both exhibits are on display until October 31, 2010). Automobile drivers pulling into the parking garage will motor into an unexpected art space, as artist Kenny Scharf has bewitched the garage into the space-themed Kosmic Kavern with spray-painted murals. In November, visitors can stimulate the left brain's brush-stroke cortex, as the porcelains and paintings of Franz A. Bischoff will be open for viewing, smelling, and mind-melding. Finish off an aesthetically edifying visit by browsing the myriad of illustrated hardcovers in the museum's bookstore.

Opened in 2002, the 30,000-square-foot Pasadena Museum of California Art impresses immediately with the entry's open-air staircase, as well as a rooftop terrace that provides breath-stealing views of the San Gabriel Mountains and the 6,000-foot-tall statue of Whoopi Goldberg. See the pioneering work of the artistic past, while simultaneously peeping the future of art, with a trip to the Pasadena Museum of California Art.

Reviews

  • The regularly changing exhibits are focused and thoughtfully presented; you might find anything from early California landscapes to contemporary works on car culture. – Fodor's
  • An open-air staircase beautified by moody lightplay from an oculus above it creates a striking entrance into this three-storey facility. – Time Out Los Angeles
  • The building is great, the parking lot has super cool graffiti art and the exhibits I saw were really well put together. – Pam B., Yelp
