The Deal

USS Yorktown

When news reached Navy officials that the Yorktown (CV-5) sunk at the Battle of Midway in June 1942, they immediately turned around and re-christened the Bon Homme Richard, an Essex-class carrier under construction, the USS Yorktown in honor of the sunken ship. The new USS Yorktown was finished in just 16.5 months in Newport News, Virginia. It played a great role in the Pacific Offensive that began in late 1943 and ended with the defeat of Japan in 1945.

Its career continued for nearly 30 more years. It eventually earned five battle stars for service off the coast of Vietnam from 1965 to 1968, and was even sent to recover the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule in December 1968. The USS Yorktown ended its career in 1970. In 1975, it was towed from Bayonne, New Jersey, to Charleston and the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum.
